I arrived at the school around 8 am and of all the kiddie rodeos I have attended, by far this was the biggest I have ever seen. Mrs. Janet Erickson, one of the 6th grade teachers, organizes this event. She is also a very well know barrel racer/trainer, a former Miss Rodeo Montana, and the mother of Montana PRCA Cowboy Ty Erickson.. Not surprisingly, she was great to work with and her passion for children really made this event so spectacular.
The morning started with a very talented 6th grader singing the National Anthem and another playing the fiddle. Two other 6th graders then showed off their “Jitterbug” skills. Mr. Jason Harris an inspirational cowboy and I acted as MC’s for this event, describing the various rodeo events, and their rules and regulations. It has become a tradition that the current Miss Rodeo Montana rides the “bull” which is a barrel attached to stretched ropes on each end, on which people bounce back and forth. I didn’t realize how high the bull would actually go in the air! Needless to say, I didn’t make it for the full 8 seconds and my dismount wasn’t very graceful, much to the delight of the students!
The 6th graders then got to rotate to eight different event stations so they could participate in all of the different events of rodeo and a few other special stations. My station was an autograph signing station where I signed over 100 autographs. Jade my “helper”, a sophomore from Helena High School, helped me keep the kids in line while they waited. She put large piece of white paper on the table for the kids to sign and write me a note on while they waited in line, which was a very special and thoughtful thing for her to do. I enjoyed attending such a fun event for the 6th graders of Helena Middle School and special thanks go to Mrs. Janet Erickson for all the hard work she puts into this annual event!
After a night of rest it was on to Billings for their 30th Annual Women’s Run. This event raises money for various women’s groups in Billings. I was invited to participate with the Montana Beef Council’s team. Even though I am from Billings, this was my first time taking part in this event and all I can say is WOW! A record-breaking 8,500 women participated in this event, either running or walking in the 2 or 5-mile race. I did the 2 mile race with the members of the Montana Beef Council. Although we didn’t race, we walked and talked while getting to know each other. It was really great to see that many women come out to support a great cause and I was honored to be a part of it. Just as a note of interest, there was a 99-year-old woman who checked off one more item on her “bucket list”, having completed the two mile portion.
Next, I’m off to Bozeman to attend the Montana State Special Olympics. This should be a wonderful experience and one which I am really looking forward to!
Until next time,
Lorissa Harris

Tough Enough to Wear Pink- Central Montana

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Pj_Ltxg6FbI/Tcgt7trHAXI/AAAAAAAAASU/FEH8iEsMa_c/s400/TETWP%2B2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604780240158523762" />
On April 30th I was off to Lewistown for a Tough Enough to Wear Pink dinner, auction, and fashion show fundraiser. Since I was only going to be gone overnight, my Corgi “Quigly” came along for a little company since I tend to travel alone most of the time. A note of interest – Lewistown is the exact geographical center of Montana … very deserving of the Central Montana designation!

This was the first year for the “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” event, and it holds special meaning for me since I work on the Inpatient Cancer Care Floor at the Billings Clinic. The dinner and auction was held at the Pine Meadow’s Golf Course and everything was covered or decorated in Pink! The evening started with a fabulous prime rib dinner followed by three strong cancer survivors who recounted their courageous stories fighting cancer. Then the fashion show started! I was the first one out on the runway, dressed in my Tough Enough to Wear Pink outfit. Jimmy Harrison “the Hat Man” was kind enough to let me borrow one of the new pink hats he handcrafted which was a huge hit! This first outfit included my pink chaps, which rounded out the “pink” look. I was the last model on the show, and wore a pink Wrangler shirt, given to me by the Ladies of Central Montana with their logo embroidered on it.

Overall, it was a great evening and I met a lot of wonderful people. I look forward to working with various Tough Enough to Wear Pink groups around the state in their efforts to raise money for Cancer Awareness. Soon, I am off to Helena to take part in “Rodeo Day”, a fun and learning experience about rodeo for Helena Middle School 6th graders.

Until next time,

Lorissa Harris

Beginning of my year!

When they said I would hit the road running they sure weren't lying! I literally have done just that. After being crowned January 16, 2011 I have been busy busy busy! My very first appearance as the new Miss Rodeo Montana 2011 was at the N.I.L.E fundraiser "Stetsons and Stilettos" it was great to be introduced in my hometown and from an organization I have been a part of for many years. Next I was off to the largest Kiddie Rodeo in the state in Lewistown MT. I got there a day early and had my first official meeting with my awesome National Director I also got see Kate and her beautiful new baby Delayne. That night I also got to take part in the Ringling Five concert. I had never seen this group of comical singers and also got pulled on stage during one of their songs to add color to the stage and act as a back up dancer! Overall the Kiddie Rodeo was a huge success and Amy and I had an awesome time and appreciate all that the Winter Fair and Mary Keer did for us. Amy and I left Lewistown and went directly to Billings for the Montana Hall and Wall dinner and auction. This year we recognized the "The Year of the Clown" and got to meet some world famous rodeo clowns. I was in great company with Amy Miss Teen Rodeo Montana 2011 and Hanna the Montana High School Rodeo Queen. What a great end to a great month, I could not have asked for a better January and cannot wait to see what this wonderful year has in store for me!

Until next time,
Lorissa Harris
MRM 11'

N.I.L.E. Pro-Rodeo this year was really special to me, it was in my hometown and this year I got to represent Montana as Miss Teen Rodeo Montana. I left Wednesday afternoon right after a math exam and drove to Billings in the pouring rain and luckily made it in one piece.
When I finally arrived I met with my 2nd mother Deb Brettin and she lined me out for the next four days of Professional Rodeo activities. I then did a photo shoot with the Billings Gazette for the "Tough Enough To Wear Pink" a fund raiser event that was sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank and St. Vincent Hospital.
It was really rainy and cold the first night, but it could have been worse. Before the rodeo I also got to be interviewed on the five o'clock news with KULR 8, Billings television station. I had been running around all that afternoon and hadn't gotten an chance to eat much that day, but I was so excited for the rodeo I forgot all about it. Before the rodeo I got to also meet up with visiting Rodeo Royalty from all across the state who had come down for the weekend. All of the girls did a wonderful job and made the rodeo queen image look awesome! I didn't get to help out with the "opening" of the rodeo but I got to push stock out of the arena and carry sponsor flags, Deb probably had about 15 flags! I also got to be with Vanessa Hardy(Megs little sis) Lacey and Elly Langager, and Shelby Sundheim. You gilrs did a GREAT job with the "Sponsor" flags and the "Opening".

Mutton-Bustin "sign-ups"

My mom had Janie and Jennika O'Neil stay with us and it was great so see them again. We stayed with them from my very first rodeo of the year, the 47th Annual Belt PRCA Rodeo and it was nice to return the favor. Jennika is the 2007-2008 Little Miss Big Sky Pro Rodeo Princess and they also took home something special this year, Janie bought a yearling gelding at the horse sale!
Jack and I promoting the NILE Rodeo!

The next day, I got to sleep in a little so that I wouldn't be totally exhausted by the end of the weekend. Deb also had miniature pony rides set up and entertained all of the little kids. It was exciting to be in my hometown and get to see all of my Angus friends and see people who I hadn't seen in a while. I hung out in the Angus barn for a little bit and then I was off to another night of rodeo. The first night I got to ride SPOT my FAVORITE black "Sankey Rodeo" horse. I got to test out a few different black horses that weekend and ended up riding 3 out of 4 of them. I got to carry flags every night on SPOT and I would have taken him home if I could have, he is such a solid horse!

Kate Ruland and Robin Nansel put on a queen clinic during the N.I.L.E. for girls who want to improve their queen abilities. I got to tag along and be a part of what they were doing. We got to go to the Rocky Mountain College Equestrian Center, learn about makeup, speeches, impromptu, hear stories from MRM 06' Cassidy Han, plus the girls got to meet with Mr. Ike Sankey to hear what he expects out of a rodeo queen. I think it was a wonderful clinic and it was great so see so many girls who are running in January for both Miss Rodeo Montana and Miss Teen Rodeo Montana.

Saturday morning, I was off to Shiptons (Big R) to sign autographs with some PRCA cowboys, bull fighters, and Dennis Halsted (PRCA Clown). After that I helped out with the "Kiddie Rodeo" and then I got to do something that always makes me appreciate what I have and holds a SPECIAL spot in my heart. I got to attend the Annual Kids and Cowboys reception to meet children who are survivors or who have cancer. It's so heart warming to see their little faces light up when they see all the queens walk in and how much it means to them get our autographs.

Thank you card from all the children who attended the Kids and Cowboys reception.

The last night of the rodeo was my favorite and ultimately the best! Everything moved so smoothly and it was Championship night so the best of the best were competing. I have to say that I will really missed Megan (she was in Japan) and this being my last Rodeo before Circuit Finals.

I have had a WONDERFUL year!

I had such a wonderful time at the N.I.L.E. and couldn't have asked for a better rodeo and I thank everyone who helped me throughout the week and I can't believe that before we know it Megan will be competing for Miss Rodeo America and then it will be MRM pageant time again!
I hope all of you girls are studying up and I wish you all the very best of luck!

Until then,
Lorissa Harris
MTRM 07'

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://mtrm2007.blogspot.com/2007/10/nile-rodeo.html' title='N.I.L.E. It was quite an interesting day, due to the fact that I was feeling a little under the weather for most of it. I had a bad experience at Burger King and spent most of the morning being sick, but that didn't stop me from going to Lewistown.

After three hours of me sleeping, we arrived. We ate at subway and the people there told us that our function was at the Yogo Inn. When we got to the Yogo Inn they had no idea what we were talking about. After a little investigating we finally figured out were we were suppose to be and the festivities began.

We got to try on the most beautiful furs and fell in love with almost all of them. There was raffle for a fur, and Megan and I bought tickets hoping to get lucky. I only bought one knowing I had not chance and Megan bought three. She wanted this one white fur more than anything and it was a pretty funny thing to watch. Unfortunately she didn't win but we still had a good time.

We were suppose to be in the trap setting contest, but I had no idea how to set one and neither did Megan, and I didn't want to do it wrong and snap one of my fingers off!! We did take part in the skillet tossing contest and if it wasn't for all the late entries I would have been at least in the top 2 but instead I finished 4th.

After, dinner we got to help hand out special awards to those who have accomplished great things throughout the year. Then we got to model the furs! Kate Rueland was also there modeling and it was her 7th year modeling and it was great to see her. I also got to model the last fur which was a sheered beaver fur that had been hand painted with flowers and pearls, it was really pretty and really expensive. After the fashion show we helped with the auction and Ed IV bought a teddy bear made of some kind of fur and gave it to me and Megan got a gold purse! It was funny because she wanted my teddy bear and I got to tease her with it!

After our day with the fur trappers we went back to our hotel room and had an interesting night. It had gotten pretty cold in Lewistown and we didn't really know how to turn on our heater and Megan said she didn't want to kill us if it was a propane heater. So instead we slept in sweats and sweaters. Megan had on three shirts and her hood from her sweater and we had to cuddle to stay warm! All of the interesting things that happen on trips, at least give us good stories for later on down the road!

Now, I'm back at school trying to figure everything out without getting overwhelmed. This weekend is the first football game so I'm planning on going to that. Go Bobcats!!

Until then,

Lorissa Harris
MTRM 07

Labor Day Weekend Rodeos!!

Well, I just finished my first week of college and it was stressful and different but a ton of fun. It's way different from high school but I have been enjoying myself so far!

Labor Day weekend in Montana is know as "Montana's biggest weekend," and I started off my weekend in Dillon, for the Dillon Jaycee Rodeo.
This rodeo means a lot to me because my very first title was the Miss Dillon Jaycee Princess. There were also some visiting royalty there I hadn't gotten to see yet this year.

Thanks to ARMY NATIONAL GUARD for their participation in the Grand Entry!
Riding with a "TANK" is interesting.

"ARMY NATIONAL GUARD are GREAT Supporters of Rodeo Royalty."
Most of the Miss Southwest Montana Royalty was there, Lizzy Vaughn, Amy Haggar, and Katie Hoppe. Leslie Furness, Miss Rodeo Western Montana, was also there, and I appreciate all they did to help in the Grand Entry and clearing the arena. Dillon Jaycees Rodeo Committee worked hard providing Class "A" acts!
I had to leave Dillon early on Sunday and drive over to White Sulphur Springs, and one of my good friends from high school Alta Pelia, and my mother accompanied me. The rodeo in White Sulphur started at 5 p.m. and I wasn't going to be able to ride in the rodeo, but I wanted to at least watch most of the rodeo, so I drove a little faster than the speed limit. Right as I came over a hill outside of Dillon, going 85, I passed a cop and he whipped around and his lights went on. I pulled off the side of the road and got all my stuff ready. He came up to my window and asked me how fast I thought I was going and I told him 80. He started laughing and I told him I'm was in a hurry to get to my next rodeo. He took all of my information, and went back to his car. Surprisingly he didn't take forever and he didn't give me a ticket or even a written warning. He just told me to slow down and get there safely. I was really glad I didn't get a ticket and now I drive a little slower and more cautious!!

We arrived in White Sulphur two hours and two missed exits later. We got to watch the end of the bull riding and it was weird just being a normal person and not all dressed up. Barb and Chanda Barber were gracious enough to bring me "Sage" and I carried the Montana Flag and pushed cattle with Marca, the new Miss Southwest Montana Teen Queen.

I enjoyed my final weekend of summer rodeos and the people I met and memories are something I will never forget. I was in the win picture during the Tractor and Equipment Race. I hadn't been to a horse race before so this was a new experience for me and enjoyed every minute of it! The Yellowstone County Commissioner John Ostlund and his wonderful wife Kristy were also there so it was great to see them, they have done so much for me this year and I appreciate it very much!

"Track-Side" with Fernado Gomez
winning Jockey.

I moved into my dorm room this weekend too! It was sad saying good-bye to my Mother and my 2nd Queen mom Deb, but it's going to be a wonderful experience and I am going to learn life skills that will benefit me greatly. I already got lost looking for my classes and packed way to much for my small little dorm room, but I'm still learning!!

This weekend, Labor Day weekend I will be in Dillon for the 1st and 2nd and then I head over to White Sulphur Springs on the 3rd. So that will pretty much wrap up my summer rodeo season but in October I have the N.I.L.E. in Billings my hometown and I'm really looking forward to that!

Until then,

Lorissa Harris
MTRM 07'

Billings NRA Rodeo/ Fort Benton PRCA Rodeo!!

Thank you Paula for letting me ride your GREAT horse "Cheyenne" !!!Well my 2nd mother Deb is in charge of the Billings NRA rodeo and I didn't have to be in Fort Benton until Saturday so I helped out there on Friday night. I was fun being in my hometown with all of my friends and people who have helped me get to where I am. I got the carry the American flag for the first time all year and I was very excited and honored to do so. Paula Harris was gracious enough to let me use her horse "Cheyenne" who was awesome and stood perfectly during the pledge and National Anthem. I also had some good company as well.

Celie Highberger the reining Home of Champions Queen was there, Sara Haux the Home of Champions Princess, and the newly crowned Home of Champions Queen, Alyson Grinestaff was also there so it was great getting to chat with them and push cattle during all the time events and they have all done a wonderful job!
John and Kristie Ostlund "wonderful sponsors"!

Saturday morning my mom, best friend Crissie, and I were all off to the Fort Benton Rodeo. Fort Benton was a lot of fun and I was really glad I got to go.
"Siren" and Lorissa at Fort Benton

My mothers Birthday was August 19th so the next morning after the rodeo we all got some coffee and rented a canoe to paddled down the Missouri river about a mile and had a great time. The first rodeo of August was in Great Falls for the Big Sky Pro Rodeo Roundup and pageant. This rodeo and pageant is kinda special to me because last summer I handed down my crown from being Miss Rodeo State Fair Princess. It was a four day rodeo with pageant action throughout the day. This year was also special because Ashley Andrews, Miss Rodeo America was here and I had a great time getting to hang out with her signing autographs and asking her a million questions about her year as MRA. Sue and Bailey Thompson were also gracious once again to bring us horses and this time I got to ride "Siren" the cutest and sweetest horse ever! The pageant was also a great success!! Kirsten won queen, Tiffany Sinclair won Princess, and little Jennika O'Neil won Little Miss! I was so proud of all the girls and it's so great to see "pageant" friends who you have spent most of your summers with.
One of my favorite horses - "Siren"

Bailey and I chatting between events.

After Great Falls I was home for a couple of days and then I headed to Missoula for the Western Montana Rodeo and pageant. I got there Wednesday night and watched the PBR with Lynne and Audrey Sholty, and got to watch Flint, who always keeps me entertained! The Rys-Sikora family was gracious enough to open their home to me during this busy fair week and I also got to ride Mariah's beautiful palomino "Butter" and appreciate all they did for me that week.

This year was also the start of the Tough Enough To Wear Pink/Miss Rodeo Montana Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament. I got to golf with three bull riders and we had a great time. We didn't win, like we had hoped, we tied for 3 rd but we had a blast. The belt buckles were really pretty and it was great to see so many people supporting the cause and to see how many people actually sported the PINK, my favorite color!

During the speech portion of the Miss Western Montana Rodeo Pageant, Megan and I also got to talk and tell stories about out year. Right before the last speaker came up Megan and I walked onto the stage and she said, "On behalf of Lorissa and I, I would just like to say... GO BOBCATS!!" We kinda got booed but it was all in good humor.

Missoula Royalty

Valley View Home - Glasgow "Little Buckaroo Rodeo"
Glasgow's - Daley Aune, Tel Aune and Jack Cornwell roped and Barrel Raced.

After being in Missoula for two days Megan, my mom, Baxter, and I were headed to Glasgow. That is quit a drive let me tell you and I didn't even drive the whole time! I just had to drive from Missoula to Havre, which is about 4 and a half hours so I pulled my weight. We finally made it later that evening and Kirsten met us there, for her first rodeo as Miss Big Sky Pro Rodeo Roundup.

Shelly Johnson brought horses for Kirsten and I and was I in for a treat! I got to ride her prized barrel racing horse "Rocky" and it was awesome! One other really cool thing that they did at this rodeo was play one of my favorite songs and ringer on my phone " Beautiful Girls" when all of us queens came into the arena! Megan's mom, Rita, and sister, Vanessa also came up and it was great getting to see them! When Vanessa and I are together it's like Meg has TWO sisters!!

Well, my summer isn't quit over yet this weekend I am headed to Fort Benton, where I get to see Sue and Bailey again and ride Siren! It is also my mom's Birthday so we are going to have a blast!
                                                                      "I LOVE you Mom!"
Until then,

Lorissa Harris
MTRM 07'

The Last Chance Stampede in Helena!

Well, last Thursday I headed down to Helena early in the morning to meet up with Megan for the Last Chance Stampede. I got to Helena first thing Thursday morning for a "kiddie parade" where about a hundred little kids dressed up for their own parade and compete for various prizes. I got to meet the Last Chance Stampede Queen, Libby, see Kirsten, Miss Big Sky Pro Rodeo Queen again, and of course my favorite queen, Megan.

After the kiddie parade Kirsten and I met up with Sue and Bailey Thompson, who were gracious enough to bring all three of us girls horses. My horse "Kody" is owned by Sonny and Bev Stiger, who were also nice enough to let us stay with them at their house and we really appreciate it.

The Helena rodeo is a three night rodeo and before each performance the queens and sponsor flags get to do a walk-by, then all the flags for the National Anthem, and then a queen buzz so it was pretty neat how much arena time we got this rodeo compared to some of the others.

The last night of the rodeo my parents got to come up and see how everything was going. This was the first rodeo where I mom didn't come the whole time and I did fairly well considering I had Sue, Bailey, and Megan to help me out whenever I needed anything, and I Thank you. It is different without your mother with you and we are slowly "weaning" each other off before I go to college.

Thanks to Sue, Bailey and Megan!

Another cool thing that happened the last night of the rodeo was Fred Whitfield came to the rodeo and it was really cool to see someone of the caliber at the rodeo. He didn't win but he was a true sportsman about the whole thing and seemed like a nice guy.
Next I am headed down to Great Falls for the Big Sky Pro Rodeo and Pageant. I am very excited because I was the State Fair Princess last year and this year Miss Rodeo America, Ashley Andrews is coming and I am very excited to meet her!!

Until then,

Lorissa Harris

Shelby Rodeo!

Well, this last weekend I was in Shelby for their fair and rodeo. It was a long five hour drive, but well worth it when we eventually got there. I met up with Kirsten Svennungsen, the Big Sky Pro Rodeo Princess, and got all lined up with my horse. The Brown's were gracious enough to bring me a horse, and their sons BJ and Jack didn't waste any time helping me out and I really appreciate all they did for me and "Jake" and I got along great!
Each night the rodeo started at 7:30 p.m. which was GREAT because, temp's that weekend soared up to 100 degrees during the day and by evening it got pretty cool and really nice toward the middle of the rodeo.

Lorissa, Kirsten and Tasha "working the arena".

On Saturday, Kirsten and I headed down to the parade, where I got to meet a lot of great people who were just thrilled we were both there. After the parade my mother and I met up with Lynne and Audrey Sholty for some lunch and had a great time catching up and talking about how my summer is going. We were then ready for the rodeo again! This time before the rodeo we carried all the sponsor flags before the National Anthem. I went first which meant I was going to be carrying two flags. My 2nd flag was the huge Wrangler flag and as I finish unwrapping it they are already calling me, so as I headed into the arena and the flag gets tangled in between my arm and the pole! I eventually got it free but it took me second!! I'm sure I'll have way more funny little things like that happen before my summer is over!

Lynn and Audrey Shotly with me at the Rodeo

Next, I head over to Helena for the Last Chance Stampede. I will get to see Megan and hear all about her wild adventures and then after that we are headed to Great Falls, for the Big Sky Pro Rodeo Roundup!

Until then,

Lorissa Harris
MTRM 07'

CM Russell Stampede Rodeo

Sorry its been a little while since I have updated my blog we are getting a new roof put on our house and our internet has been down. They all sold really well and the people in Stanford were so nice and friendly which made things that much better.

The next morning Jennika and I got up early to work slack and had a great time. Dr. John Gee was gracious enough to bring me a horse named "Sammy" and we got along great!
The rodeo that day started at 1:30 and I was excited because I got to see Megan and catch up on all the rodeo's we had been to without each other. We all had a great time together and I really enjoyed my stay in Stanford at the Sundowner Hotel and Thank everyone who helped out!

Dr. John Gee & Jennika

"Working the arena"

Next, I am off to Shelby for their Fair and rodeo and then next weekend I'll be in Helena with Megan again!!

Until then,

Lorissa Harris
MTRM 07'

Vaughn/ The 4th in Red Lodge

"Local Rodeo Fans" - Haelee, Cambrie and Bridger stopped to visit after the Rodeo.

Busy, Busy, Busy is the best way to describe my last week and a half. I started June 29 and 30th in Vaughn for their first PRCA. The JS rodeo Company did a wonderful job and I had a great time with Kirsten, Miss Big Sky Pro Rodeo Princess, Jennika O'Neil and Bailey Thompson. The second night of the rodeo we did have a something interesting happen. Bailey, Kirsten, and I were all in the arena for calf roping when one of the saddle bronc horses flipped over in the chute and had to be let out. They let the horse out and it came running blind around the arena.

The pick-up men were trying to rope it and get it out of the arena when it came running straight for us. I was the the middle and Kirsten was on the receiving end of getting bumped by the horse. I remember closing my eyes and hoping nothing bad happened. Luckily nothing bad happened and everyone was ok. Like my mother always says, it's a live show and anything can happen. My mother and I also got to stay with Jody which was so much fun getting to talk and get to know her even better and see all of Gary's buckles, he has a ton a pick-up man buckles and it was such a blast!

Lorissa & Jody before the Rodeo.

We left early Sunday morning and headed home for some more clothes and then I was off to Red Lodge for the 4th. I stayed with my Queen mom # 2 Deb Brettin and had such a wonderful time. Early Monday morning the Home of Champions Rodeo Queen Ceily Highberger and I got to work slack and it was like being at a mini NFR. There were so many top cowboys and cowgirls there it was like seeing your favorite celebrities up close. We then headed off to the parade with the held daily at noon. On the 2nd there is also a kiddie rodeo and then rodeo at 6 p.m. for the 2nd and 3rd. On the Fourth the rodeo was at 3. On the 3rd there was also a MTV star that appeared at the Red Lodge Rodeo, Johnny Knoxville and he even participated in the wild horse race!

Tasha Wieferich, Brookman Rodeo Company was so sweet to let me ride her horses for the Home of Champions Rodeo, Thank you so VERY much! After three days of HOT weather and rodeo, the Home of Champions pageant took place. On July 6, we set everything up in the Bull-n-Bear and then the contestants took their written test and had their orientation. Sue Thompson and Kristy Stuart were the judges and it was really cool to get to meet Kirsty, because she was Miss Rodeo Montana 2001 and 5th runner up at Miss Rodeo America and super nice.

Then on July 7th, the Home of Champions Royalty Ceily, Sare and I headed down to Fromberg for the parade and autograph signing. While we were there I also got to see Marg Taylor who made my chaps and I also got to meet Birdie Askin Johnston who was married to the late Dick Johnston a World Champion Bronc rider. So it was a great opportunity and you just never know who you are going to meet.

Later that night was the public speaking portion of the competition. Each contestant was asked two impromptu questions and had to do a commercial/speech on the Home Of Champions Rodeo. I got to ask the reining royalty some questions and tell everyone more about Miss Teen Rodeo Montana and my duties as Miss Teen. There was also a live auction and I had my eye on a pair of blue Luchese Boots. My mom helped me out bidding and I got a pair of boots valued at $500 for $150!! I was pretty excited and can't wait to wear them.

Also, the new Miss Home Of Champions Rodeo Queen is Alyson Grinestaff, so a BIG Congrats to her!! While in Red Lodge I also got a message from Mariah Rys-Sikora that while at Silver State she was the 2nd runner up in the Queen Contest so great job Mariah representing Montana!!

So, this week I'm going to relax a little bit and take my clothes to the dry cleaners and get ready for this weekend. I am off to Stanford Saturday for a kiddie rodeo and then rodeo on Sunday.

Until then,
Lorissa Harris

Chinook/Augusta Rodeo!!

Well this weekend was a quit the exciting rodeo weekend. Thursday afternoon my mother and I traveled up the the highline to Chinook Montana for the Bear Paw Roundup. Thursday night Megan, Vanessa, my mom, and I all went to the Silver Spur Dinner, where we were introduced and got to speak for a brief second and they also held the Calcutta that evening.

The next day was the first day of the rodeo and I was very excited to be back in my old hometown and see all of my old friends. My cousin Savannah Smith was also gracious enough to let my borrow her palomino reining horse, "Forest". I got to carry the Canadian flag in the grand entry and do the Canadian National Anthem. The heat was amazing that weekend and Friday night I think the heat got to me and I got a little sick at the rodeo.

Saturday night was a little better. I felt a lot better and the heat wasn't as bad. We had a good size crowd for the kiddie rodeo and the rodeo went smoothly. Megan and I are becoming Pro cattle pushers and this time all of the cowboys and cowgirls made it to their victory laps!!

Early the next morning Megan, Merylee, and I got up early and were out of Chinook at 6:45 a.m. on our way to Augusta. I had never been to the Augusta Rodeo and wow was it an experience. We arrived around 10:00 a.m. and signed some autographs at a local store called Latigo and Lace. We later met up with Jody and headed down to the rodeo grounds. The Heckman's were gracious enough to let me borrow one of their horses. I rodeo Hannah Heckman's, Little Miss Big Sky Pro Rodeos horse, "Snoop". He was a beautiful black horse and sure looked flashy with my chaps.

After the rodeo Megan and I left Augusta, which was packed with tons of people and headed for Bozeman. We stopped in Helena for dinner and then made our way down to Bozeman. I stayed with Megan Sunday night, and then early the next morning made my way over to MSU-Bozeman for Freshman Orientation.

My next rodeo is in Vaughn this weekend and then on Sunday I head over to Red Lodge for the the 4Th of July and I am very excited for that and to help out with their pageant the following weekend!!

Until then,

Lorissa Harris
MTRM 07'

Belt Rodeo!

Well Belt was my first rodeo of the season and was quite a success. My mom and I drove down Friday night and got to stay with the O'neils. They were very generous to let us stay with them and invade their house and we really appreciated it. I also appreciate them hauling my horse back and forth to the rodeo grounds and Janie is the most wonderful cook EVER!

On Saturday morning Jennika and I went down to the rodeo grounds for grand entry practice and I got to test out the horse I would be riding for the weekend. Wally McManigle was gracious enough to let me use his horse Doc, and we got along just fine and I loved riding him in the rodeo and parade. He is still pretty quick for being 23 years old too! The first night of the rodeo it rained the whole night, but what can you expect with Montana weather. Megan and I had fun though sitting out in the arena pushing calves and catching up since the last time we had been together.

Spending time with local rodeo fans

The next morning Megan, Jennika, and I all headed downtown for the parade. Doc and I carried the Montana flag, and the wind was just howling on Sunday. After the parade we went to the park behind the rodeo grounds and put on a Kiddie rodeo. We had a lot of little kids show up and I think if you have some candy and snacks the kids just seem to flock.

Later, that afternoon we headed back for another afternoon of rodeo. I also got to push calves with Hanna Heckman, Little Miss Big Sky Pro Rodeo. It was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed my experience at my first rodeo in Belt. All of the people and rodeo committee members were so nice and I can't wait to see what the rest of my summer full of rodeos has in store for me.

This weekend I am headed to Chinook for the Bear Paw Roundup and I am very excited, because I used to live up in Chinook and I spent my Freshman year of high school there. Then on Sunday we are headed to Augusta for the day and then I have to head over to Bozeman for my college orientation. It should be interesting to see how we pull this one off, but I can't wait!

Until then!

Lorissa Harris
MTRM 0 7'

Pictures/ Outlaw Football game

Well, this weekend was a little more exciting than most of mine have been in a while. Friday morning I met up with Megan to head over to Miles City to do her Miss Rodeo America pictures and our Miss Rodeo Montana program book pictures. Her sister Vanessa rode with us and her mother Rita followed us up there. I drove and I'm sure I scared them a little every once in a while, but I never said I was the best driver. It was a lot of fun getting to see Megan taking hundreds of photos trying to get the perfect one for MRA. We also were a little daring towards the end of the shoot and tried to take pictures of the both of us in our chaps on top of this fallen down tree branch. It didn't really turn out but we sure had a lot of fun, you could tell we hadn't seen each other in a while.

Then on Saturday night I was the official coin tosser at the Outlaw football game, here in my hometown of Billings. I even actually practiced a little bit! When I got out there, they had a coin the size of a half dollar so I had no trouble tossing it. The Outlaws won the coin toss and the game so that was good for them and their conference standings. I even got to come onto the field at half time and help out a little bit. I also got to meet Lonnie Bell and got a picture with him! So it was a really fun night and I appreciated them having me come and help out.

This weekend I also got the graphics put onto my truck, and Jerry at the Paint Doctor did a wonderful job! I love it and it looks so amazing.

So, coming up next for me is the Belt rodeo this weekend and I'm a little nervous just because it is my first rodeo, but I'm sure everything will go smoothly, and I get to see Megan again so it'll be a good time.

Until next time,
Lorissa Harris
MTRM 07'

State Golf/Graduation

Wow, it's been quit sometime since I have written on my blog. I have been super busy in the last couple of weeks and I am very sorry, I haven't updated you all. May 14-16 I was in Shelby for the State B Golf Tournament. After two days of intense competition I finished 8th overall and both our girls and boys golf team placed 2nd in the state, something that Shepherd has never done before. We were all really excited about that!! Then on May 18, it was my Birthday and then May 20 I graduated from Shepherd High School. My family from all over the country came up and we had a wonderful time. So I have been pretty busy and will again be writing "Thank You" cards for quit a while.

Then, on May 23, I traveled up to the Zurich to speak at my cousins 8th grade graduation. I was very honored to do this, because this had been the very place I have graduated from 8th grade. I saw teachers and friends that I hadn't seen in a few years and it was great to share with them what I learned from high school and what to kind of expect. So, I hoped what I shared with them will help them in the future.

I'm going to get a break now for a week or two before rodeo season starts! I can't wait to get underway. My first rodeo is in Belt and I have never been before and I can't wait to see what the summer holds for Megan and I!

Until then,
Lorissa Harris
MTRM 07'

Golf/ New Chaps

Well I have slowed down a little lately and have actully been acting like a high school senior. I have been golfing a lot lately on my schools varsity golf team and have been doing way better than my first tournament. I have been shooting pretty low scores and have been placing in most of the tounraments. I took 4th in Forsyth, 2nd at my home tounament, 4th at Huntely, 6th at Big Timber, and then 10th at Bozeman. Our team has also been doing really well too. We have broken the school recored three times now and are sitting 2nd in the state right now! So we are pretty excited about that. We leave tonight for Bozeman for our Divisional tournament, where we have to be in the top 4 teams or the top 15 as an individual. I'm pretty nervous but I have confidence that we'll make it out ok.

I also got my chaps last Friday and they are amazing! They turned out exactly the way we had designed and I am very happy with them. They lovely ladies at Leather Legends out of Fromberg did a fabulous job and I couldn't be more pleased with them!

In the next few weeks I have state golf, and graduation. I graduate May 20, 2007 and have a ton of family coming up and can't wait for this summer!

I'll tell you how everything goes this week with golf.

Thank you,
Lorissa Harris
MTRM 07'

My Gala Fundraiser!

Well my Gala fundraiser was this last weekend and it turned out to quite a success! For most of the day I was golfing in Columbus at my high school golf tournament, and then right when I got finished my friend Jenessa Monson picked me up and we were on out way to Billings for the party. There were a lot of familiar faces there and both the live and silent auctions went really well. I gave a welcome speech, telling everyone how I did playing in my first golf tournament, which wasn't my very best. I took a 10 on my very first hole and it seemed that every hazard, water, or out of bounds I was there. But hey it was the first tournament of the year and my mind was on the party so I think that makes it for up, my golf coach on the other hand is glad that now that the party is over,so now I can maybe concentrate a little more! I also told a funny story at the party about Megan and I getting pulled over and everyone liked that one. There was also a visiting royalty mini style show and the Home Of Champions Queen, Brettin Ranch Little Miss, and Miss Rodeo Montana. During the live auction I felt right at home. My step-dad Andy Rest is a ring man at cattle auction so taking bids at my Gala was a piece of cake! My dad Todd Harris from California also flew in for the weekend and is getting familiar with all this "Queen" stuff. Then at the end of the party I presented my mother and Deb Brettin with flowers for all their hard work. I really appreciate all that everyone has done for me and for all the love and support I have gotten from everybody. If I could I would list everyone but that would take a very long time! I just would like everyone to know how much I appreciate everyones support by attending, donating, buying, and helping out where they could. The thank you are endless and I will be writing thank you cards for a very long time!
Thank You,
Lorissa Harris
MTRM 07'

FFA Convention/ Megan's Coronation

Well this week was very very busy but very fun. We had the State FFA Convention in Billings at the Holiday Inn and I was trying to be in two places at once. I was participating on my chapters Sales and Service team and being Miss Teen Rodeo Montana at the Miss Rodeo Montana booth with Megan. Our booth by far was the most popular too and Megan and I got some more good quality bonding time together!!
So the first day of competition we had to do the team problem, so my three other teammates and I walk in and introduce ourselves to the judges and as I'm going to shake the second judges hand, I hit her soda and it went everywhere! I was really embarrassed and thought that we were done for right then and there but everything turned out better than we thought.
While we were tending the booth Megan and I also got to meet Miss Montana and attend the delegates luncheon where she spoke and took many pictures with us. She was very nice and hopefully she will be able to attend my gala.
Then on Friday night nine other of my fellow chapter members and I all received our State Degrees, one of the highest honors you can receive in the state. We had a wonderful dinner and our Governor was a special guest speaker and also brought his cute dog!
Saturday during the awards I left early to head up to Bozeman for Megan's coronation. I brought my Friend Crissie with me who knows nothing about rodeo but loves the queen stuff and traveling with me on all of my little adventures. Megan's party was a blast the food was great her silent auction items were super cute, (I got some pillow case covers of cute cartoon cowboys!) and Vanessa and I were also Megan's Vanna Whites for her live auction. Her coronation was a huge success and I was very honored to be there and to be able to travel and get to know her and I can't wait to see what the future holds for the both of us.
So, up next is my Gala party and I'm starting to get really nervous!! So I hope to see a lot of familiar faces and hope everything goes well.
Thank you,
Lorissa Harris
MTRM 07'

Montana Fur Trappers and FFA Conevention

Well, this week was filled with more events that were very interesting. On Friday I read to the kindergartners at Shepherd Elementary as a "Royal Reader" and it was so much fun. I got to wear a cape and walk in down a red carpet, and dub each of them on the head and then read them a book. It's a lot harder then it looks to hold the book to the side, while reading, and then show them all this pictures, but it was a lot of fun and they really enjoyed it. Then on Saturday at 5 A.M. my mom and I headed down to Bozeman to meet Megan to go over to Kaispell for the Outdoor show. Five hours later Megan and I made it to Kalispell, we walked around and sat at the Montana Fur Trappers booth, where we learned a lot about trapping and all the different animals they trap, etc. Megan and I also got matching bobcat fur tail key chains! We headed back to Bozeman that night and saw tons of deer. After we filled up in Helena, Megan and I were talking and all of a sudden we see flashing lights. The funny thing though is earlier that day I told my mom that this summer I was going to drive with my hat and crown so if I got pulled over maybe they would be nicer and possibly not give me a ticket. So Megan yells for me to grab her hat, I grabbed the hat and the crown had fallen off so I was digging in the back seat to find it, I finally did and she got in on and situated. The cop then came up to the window and asked for her license, insurance, and registration. She handed him her license and I got out her insurance and registration, but we couldn't find the right year! I swear she had every year from 2000 to 2006 but the cop was nice about it and in the ended up just giving her a ticket, which was no big deal, but it the night so much more interesting since we were getting really tired. We both had a lot of fun though, it was a good bonding experience for the both of us and we also got some auction items for our parties so that was good and we are very thankful for that.

Next for me I will be at the Montana State FFA Convention where I will be competing on my FFA chapters State Sales and Service team. I will also be at the Miss Rodeo Montana booth. I will also be receiving my State FFA Degree this year. To earn this degree you have to be a senior and apply based on your past involvement with the FFA organization. So, I'm pretty excited about that and then we will be heading over to Bozeman for Megan's coronation and I'm sure that will be a good time as well. My mom and I are also getting all the details of my party together and are focusing on that right now, so that everything goes well.
Well I'll write back soon!

Thank You,
Lorissa Harris
MTRM 07'

Well I haven't really been doing a whole lot lately. I have just been trying to keep up on all of my studies and prepare for my Miss Teen Rodeo Montana Gala. Megan and I will be heading over to Kalispell on Saturday March 10 for the Montana Fur Trappers so, I'm pretty excited about that seeing as I have never been to one. Also, I love to play golf, and our high school season for golf starts next week and I'm very EXCITED!!! I haven't been playing for very long, but I really enjoy the challenging mind game and hope to make it to state again for the 3rd year in a row. So, not a lot going on right now but I'm sure in the next few weeks I'll have more news.
Until then thank you,
Lorissa Harris
MTRM 07'

NRA Finals!

Well, the NRA Finals were last weekend and it went very well for my first kick off rodeo of the season. Before the rodeo Megan and I met at Lithia Dodge for a live remote with 105.9 The BAR, where we got quick spot on the radio. Then we were off to the metra. The first night of the rodeo I was suppose to carry the first sponsor flag. Megan (MRM) and Jessica (Ravalli County Queen) all carried flags before every event. So I went into the arena and was about to round the corner by the bucking chutes and the gatemen didn't hear the announcer, announcing sponsor flags and let out the first bareback horses! Luckily I was paying attention and high-tailed it right on out of there! No one got hurt thankfully, and hey it's a live performance so anything can happen at any time.
During those three days I got to hear many exciting stories from Megan and her travels from out of state and I also got to know Jessica and I hope to see her this summer at various rodeos. All of the people who helped out with the rodeo were also very, very nice. Ty and Karen Yost were such sweet people and Ty did a wonderful job putting on the NRA Finals, and the Mitchells for providing their wonderful horses, we used for the Finals.
Megan and I also got to see a few familiar faces, we saw Cassidy Han MRM 06', Audrey Shotly MTRM 06', Lynne Sholty, Callie Freeman, and Hanna Heckman Little Miss Big Sky Pro-Rodeo and her wonderful family.
So the NRA Finals were a hit and a ton of fun and I can't wait until this summer, all the crazy things that I'm sure will happen to me at all the rodeos!
My next event is March 10 where Megan and I will be attending our first Montana Fur Trappers Convention!
I'll write back soon
Thank you,
Lorissa Harris
MTRM 07'

WOW! What an experience this is going to be! Right after being crowned I have been going a hundred miles an hour and I love it. I got back from the pageant and was off to Culbertson, Mt for Class B, Speech and Drama Divisionals, where I took 2nd loosing by only one point! Then we were off to State, in Missoula, MT. At state I got to see one my favorite Rodeo Queens, Mariah Rys-Sikora, the Montana High School Rodeo Queen. After two days of tough competition I missed going to finals by one point again ( only the top 8 go to finals) and took 9th. Mariah on the other hand took 5th and did a wonderful job!! I have also been doing TV and radio interviews with 105.9 the BAR, and Q2 TV, and The Northern Ag Network. Its been very different and very exciting. The genorosity and support of everyone in the communtity has been great too! All of the local newspapers have run the story and are glad to have a Miss Teen Rodeo Montana from the Billings area.
The NRA Finals are my next big thing Feb. 16-18 in Billings, where I get to be with Megan Hardy, Miss Rodeo Montana!! I'm super excited and can't wait to get together with her and get to know her ever better. She will do a great job this year and do well at Miss Rodeo America!!
Well I'll write again soon!
Thank you,
Lorissa Harris
Miss Teen Rodeo Montana 2007
